Are you protected from mosquitoes? Have you been disease free? These pests, known as the Asian tiger mosquitoes, have been spreading around the southeastern United States. These persistent pests came originally to the US inside tire shipments around Central America and California. It is possible that they spread across the country through tire shipments containing eggs. While not really decreasing any populations in their ecosystems, they are spreading diseases such as dog heart worm and encephalitis.
This could explain the recent outbreak of dog heart worm disease in Miami, Florida in both humans and household pets. Effects include lung damage, heart failure, and other organ damage. "I recently lost my dog, Willie, who got this disease. He likes to hang around outside a lot, which could explain how he got it from those Asian Tiger Mosquitoes I've been hearing about," says Luke Harper, a Miami citizen.
These pests have also been spreading encephalitis. This is an inflammation in the brain. Symptoms include fever, headaches, loss of energy, and poor appetite. "I've been feeling very sick with a terrible fever and headache. It's all started around the time I got these mosquito bites," says Shawn Padilla, from Montgomery, Alabama.
